Diving in: A Sunset Engagement Session on Cape Cod with Ellie & Luiz

The best photos often happen when you are willing to try something new. For Ellie and Luiz, that meant walking farther, getting a little sandy, stepping into the water, and trusting that the best moments would come naturally.

As a Boston wedding photographer, these are the sessions I love most: the ones where couples let go of perfection and embrace the adventure.

With their wedding just one month away, I met Ellie and Luiz for a Cape Cod engagement session at Sandy Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts. I made the drive down early because I never want to risk being late, stopping for lunch and even an antiquing break before arriving about 30 minutes early to explore the beach and find the best spots for the evening light.

When Ellie and Luiz arrived with their adorable dog, Moxie, the session immediately felt less like a photoshoot and more like a walk with friends. We laughed, explored, and followed the light wherever it took us.

Luiz is originally from Brazil, so I got to put my limited Portuguese to use during the session. We didn’t talk about the World Cup (sore subject!), but those little moments of connection are one of my favorite parts of photography: getting to know the people I’m photographing beyond the camera.

One thing I noticed right away was how willing they were to try anything. For a photographer, that trust is everything. We walked from one end of Sandy Neck Beach to the other, moved through the dunes, spent time in the water, and embraced the unexpected moments along the way.

And yes, I will absolutely get my clothes wet for the shot.

As the sun set, the entire beach transformed into a warm amber glow. The dunes, shoreline, and ocean became the perfect backdrop for their Cape Cod engagement photos, but the images were special because Ellie and Luiz were willing to be present and adventurous.

That willingness to try something new is also what brought me to photography. Picking up a camera was once a leap into the unknown, but it led me to incredible places, amazing people, and stories like Ellie and Luiz’s. Photography is a reminder that some of the best moments come when you are open to the unexpected.

I cannot wait to continue telling their story on their wedding day next month.
