A Rainy Beacon Hill Engagement Session with Kaitlyn and Jordan
“We had never taken photos & we were very nervous about posing but our photos ended up being so beautiful! John’s artistry & vision are very apparent in our photos & we’re so grateful he could create something so special for us!”
They say a wet knot is harder to untie, so when Kaitlyn and Jordan’s engagement session in Beacon Hill was met with a little rain, we didn’t fight it — we leaned into it.
It started like a typical New England trick: a bit of sun, soft light, the kind that makes you think you might get lucky. Then, just as quickly, it shifted. That’s Boston — hot and cold in the same breath, one moment calm and bright, the next turning overcast and rain-heavy without much warning.
As someone who grew up here, I’m used to waking up and checking the weather before I even think about stepping outside. Kaitlyn and Jordan, both from California, less so. They had driven up from Providence, where Kaitlyn is pursuing her PhD at Brown University. Like any good sports, they embraced the change with laughter.
That shift made everything better: more honest and more alive. Their laughter had real staying power as we moved through Beacon Hill without trying to control much of anything, just letting the streets, the rain, and the rhythm of the moment lead us. It felt like two people choosing presence over perfection.
With no sun in sight, what shone through was their connection. Instead of pulling back, they leaned closer together, laughing harder because of it. By the time we reached the Boston Public Garden, the rain stopped almost as quickly as it came. Again, that’s Boston.
As a Boston couples photographer, I’ve learned that perfection is honestly a little boring — it leaves no room for life to show up. Presence is where the good stuff is: wet hair, slipping laughter between sentences, small pauses when the rain gets heavier, and moments that refuse to behave.
And in that presence comes a rawness where everything feels more vulnerable, and because of that, more real.
