It Takes a Village: A Friends and Family-Filled Proposal at the Charlestown Navy Yard with Julia and ryan

It takes a lot to plan the perfect proposal. It takes even more to plan the perfect day. For Julia and Ryan, it was friends and family that made both happen.

Ryan and I had been discussing proposal locations for a few weeks, looking for somewhere a little more private by the water. Having known Julia since childhood, he wanted a setting that felt personal. We settled on the Charlestown Navy Yard, where Ryan had found a tucked-away corner with a great view himself. Points to Ryan for the location scouting.

When I arrived early to scope out the scene, I found Ryan and Julia's older sister already hard at work, moving furniture, securing press-on nails, and even preparing a brand-new Reformation dress for Julia to change into after the proposal. It's always heartwarming to see how much people do for someone they love, especially when it comes to making a day feel perfect.

As a Boston proposal photographer, I get to witness plenty of behind-the-scenes planning, but there's something especially meaningful about seeing friends and family come together to make a moment happen. From keeping secrets to coordinating the smallest details, everyone had a part to play.

When Julia arrived from lunch with her girlfriends at Prima, Ryan got down on one knee, and she practically levitated with excitement. Sometimes, getting people to show their emotions in front of a camera takes a little work. With Julia, the challenge was keeping up with all the joy. After an easy yes and a quick outfit change worthy of New York Fashion Week, we set off through the Navy Yard for waterfront engagement photos, capturing the maritime scenery and a few familiar faces along the way.

Julia had assumed a proposal wasn't coming just yet, especially since her sister had recently gotten engaged. Ryan had other plans. In addition to organizing the perfect surprise proposal, he'd arranged for their friends to gather at the nearby Anchor bar for a small celebration. As we arrived, Julia was once again overwhelmed with excitement, seeing friends near and far who had come to celebrate this next chapter with her.

What started as a surprise proposal in Boston became something much bigger: a reminder of the people who show up for us, keep our secrets, and make life's biggest moments even more meaningful.

We finished the afternoon down by the docks, taking playful couples portraits and recreating old family photos while making a few new memories of our own. For me, that's what makes being a Boston couples photographer so rewarding. It's not just about documenting two people in love, but also the friendships, family, and shared history that surround them.

Ryan and Julia's Charlestown Navy Yard proposal was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best days aren't made by two people alone. They're made by everyone who loves them.
