Between Stops: A Street-Style South End Engagement Session with Hannah & David
Being from Boston has made me more familiar with its streets than most. For Hannah and David, revisiting some of those streets was exactly the vibe we wanted for their South End engagement shoot.
Hannah and David had reached out regarding their 2027 wedding, and the vibe was very much a fun night out at the bar, cool girl with a martini. Naturally, we wanted their engagement photos to feel a little nontraditional, leaning into street style, the city, and the feeling of simply spending a day together.
We met by the Arlington T station, a stop I used to frequent in college while working nearby. Rain was in the forecast, but we were holding out hope it would stay light. And for a while, it did.
We wanted the shoot to feel like a day out in the city, so we played around the Green Line entrance, experimenting with compositions and making the most of the surroundings. We equally explored inside the station, running down the halls and forgetting what an engagement shoot was supposed to look like. There was no need to find the perfect backdrop, we were just out exploring Boston together.
From there, we walked into the South End and found ourselves listening to Phoebe Bridgers before stopping on an overpass. I'm drawn to photos that don't immediately scream engagement, where you might only notice the ring after taking in the rest of the frame. These more unexpected places allow the story to come through, relying less on finding the prettiest spot and more on the people standing in it.
Being a Boston engagement photographer means having a city full of familiar streets, corners, and places to revisit. Growing up here has given me a different relationship with the city. I don't always see a location for what it's known for, but for what it could become in a photograph. Sometimes, an ordinary street crossing or a subway entrance tells a more interesting story than a postcard view ever could.
We kept exploring through the South End, prioritizing street crossings, stoops, and, of course, joy. After a quick outfit change, we stopped for ice cream, letting the afternoon take us wherever it wanted to go. The street lamps came on, and so too did the rain start to come down.
But that's the story.
Not every engagement session needs golden-hour light, a famous Boston landmark, or a perfectly planned itinerary. Sometimes, the best Boston couples photography comes from embracing the city as it is, finding beauty in the everyday, and letting the experience lead the way.
Hannah and David's session was confirmation of something I'd already been feeling: it's the people, not the places. The streets give us somewhere to go, but the story comes from who's walking them.
