Make Way for Duckling: A Boston Public Garden Maternity with Lorraine and Jason
Maternity sessions teem with life. For Lorraine and Jason, this one was also steeped in anticipation, with a little surprise waiting to be discovered.
We met at the Boston Public Garden for an afternoon of maternity photography and a special gender reveal, celebrating not only the life they were preparing to welcome, but the moment they would learn a little more about who their little one would be.
This would be my first gender reveal, and I was excited for what I knew would be a fun, emotional, and special experience to be a part of.
Lorraine's vision was a cute little picnic, with a basket holding the big reveal. Her friend helped with the setup while Jason and I got started on the footbridge, which surprisingly had very little foot traffic that afternoon. I wanted these initial photos to focus more on the pregnancy itself, playing with the sonogram and different hand placements to capture those little details that make this chapter so meaningful.
We talked about Lorraine's home country of Brazil, working in the service industry, and how fast things can change. It's these conversations that make a session feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending an afternoon with friends. As a Boston couples photographer, I love getting to know the people in front of my camera just as much as I enjoy documenting the moments behind it.
Before long, we could see the setup was ready, so we returned to the spot where the gender reveal would happen and settled into the picnic vibe. With the trees surrounding us and all the thoughtful little details coming together, it was the perfect setting for a moment Lorraine and Jason would remember for years to come.
As they opened the basket, the big news was finally out. They were having a boy! The excitement and joy that followed brought a whole new energy to the afternoon. Getting to photograph my first gender reveal was such a special experience, especially knowing these images would become part of their family's story long before their little one arrived.
With a new excitement in the air, we revisited all our favorite spots around the Garden, capturing more photographs and celebrating this next chapter. Lorraine and Jason were a reminder that transitions in life can come from any and all directions, from the little moments between two people to the anticipation of a family growing. And sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from simply making space for a moment to happen.
